Troubleshooting

Something isn't working

Common stops along the way, and what they actually mean. The app explains most of it itself — these are the same answers, gathered in one place.

Planning

“The calculation failed”

Usually there is no drivable road to one of the destinations — a mountain cabin, a cottage without an address, or a point in the middle of a nature reserve. The map then shows the previous route, not the new one. Try a nearby town or a real street address instead.

The route takes a long time to calculate

Search accuracy trades speed against precision. Steps 1–2 are enough for a quick overview; higher steps look further for better stops. If it is set high on a long trip, the wait is expected rather than a fault.

A stop is missing the facility I required

Requirement filters are built on open data. In Trafikverket's rest-area data only about one in three rest areas has its toilet registered — a missing value means nobody has mapped it, not that it isn't there. Stops that couldn't be confirmed are dropped first, and are marked “Unconfirmed” if nothing else is available.

Google and the free tier

“Google Maps API key missing”

This is not an error. The free tier runs on open services — OpenRouteService, Trafikverket and Open Places — with no key at all. The route planner works as usual. The message only concerns the features that need Google.

Travel Guide won't start

Travel Guide is part of premium mode: it needs Google's place data to judge what is worth seeing. Turn on Premium mode in the app's system menu and add your own Google key.

“Avoid the same road was skipped”

That feature requires a Google key and switches off automatically on the free tier. The rest of the calculation is unaffected.

Account and export

I don't want to create an account

Choose “Continue locally” in the sign-in dialog. Projects and settings are then bound to that browser, and can be moved with the .json export from the Export card.

The export doesn't land where I expected

The Export card in the System tab has four ways out: the whole project as a file, Excel, Google Maps and Google My Maps. They do different things — My Maps keeps every stop, an ordinary Maps link does not.

A shared trip won't open

Shared Happy Trails links work without an account, but can be switched off by whoever shared them. Ask for a new link.
